Kreamy Kraken
Nov 2021
To celebrate Red Room’s 12 years anniversary, the modern vegetarian restaurant invited 12 artists to perform live painting to (literally) paint a picture of our view of an environmentally friendly future. I was commissioned to do a piece for their new menu item, “Kreamy Kraken”, a vegan sandwich with faux smoked salmon and special creamy sauce.
The name of the dish just caught my attention instantly. I imagine a scary-looking giant Kraken surfacing out of the ocean and starting to make a sandwich for the people waiting to be rescued. The tiny people could be screaming for help or cheering for the delicious food. We don’t know for sure. The mysterious and the unknown can always feel dangerous to us, like our future and the future of this planet. But maybe this monstrous creature can be a friendly aid. Living in a time of uncertainty, we look out for each other to survive.
The anniversary party went from morning till late evening. A beautiful autumn day filled with vitality and live music and dance. We all felt very blessed that we got to hold this event during a pandemic time. Thanks to all the people I met that day.
Red Room Rendezvous is a modern vegetarian restaurant that also serves as a vital art community in Taipei.
